CHINA: History and Culture
China: History and Culture
«China: History and Culture» is a multifaceted publishing project that introduces Greek readers to China through its language, art, philosophy, and politics — both ancient and contemporary. The series aims to approach China in a way that also brings into focus its differences from, and affinities with, Greek and wider European civilization.
On another level — though pointing in the same direction — the project engages with a condition we find especially compelling: the typographic tension and interplay that arise when two distinct writing cultures share a page. Greek and Chinese script sit side by side, arranged sometimes vertically and sometimes horizontally; ideogram and letter meet not as mere juxtaposition but as a living, flowing conversation that runs through the series’ entire design philosophy — turning each book into a printed meeting point between two great civilizations. Our design approach was built around exactly this scope, and it grew directly out of the editorial vision behind the series.
In keeping with this thinking, the emblem printed on each volume’s spine carries its own significance. CUP’s own emblem -the Labyrinth of Knossos- serves as a third point of reference, rounding out the design approach.
